Question

I have a Weil McClain Gold Oil burner that has a power vent hooked up to it (no chimney for exhaust). The power vent works the way it is suppose to coming on 30 seconds before the burner and runs about 45 seconds after it shuts off. I feel like this is very inefficient ... does Weil McClain offer some type of direct vent attachment that would be more efficient than the current system I have?

Hi gfontana
The Weil Mclain Gold boiler is one of the most efficient hot water boilers available. The fan cycles that you are describing are safety measures. They are refered to as pre-purge (the 30 seconds on time before the burner ignites) and post-purge (the 45 seconds after the burner shuts off). The purpose is to assure that there is no residual gas build up in the fire chamber and to prove that there is sufficient draft for the burner to operate safely. These very short cycles do not materially affect the boiler's efficiency and are industry standard for this type of unit. There is no vent attachment availble such as you describe. And any attempt to modify the factory configuration will void your warranty and potentially create a hazardous condition.

Yes...I understand the purpose of the power vent. I heard there are other burners (Boderus?) that have direct intake/exhaust pipes that allow them to run more efficient and quieter. My system is 10 years old and I was hoping Weil McClain might have devised a similar attachment that would eliminate the need for the power vent.
