Question

I inadverdently turned the handle (red) next to the spigot where I routinely drain water from my furnace. (Burnham Independence) At first, the water level would not rise, now the tank seems overfilled, or at least the water level has filled the tube. What is the red valve, and what can I do to fix my furnace?

Answer

Hi XXXXXXXX,

You need to drain the excess water from your boiler. Look for a hose type "faucet" that we refer to as a boiler drain near the bottom of the boiler at the right side rear of the boiler. Drain enough water out of the boiler so the level in the site glass is ~2/3 full. It's best to do this when the burners are not firing so shut of the power switch while you are doing this. As far as the red handle is concerned, I have no way of knowing for sure what it is since every installer pipes thing up a little differently. I'll need more info, such as what happened when you turned it, in order to give you a more informed answer. Also please describe the "handle" is it a lever type handle? Also the location of the boiler drain I mentioned is the factory designated location. Ocassionally it may be moved to the other side if existing piping configurations make the alternate location more feasible.
