Question

Hi, I have a medium hair cat. I just got her from a friend. I have noticed that where ever she was laying down at and when she moves theres a lot of hair left. when she rubs on you she leaves nothing but hair. Also when you pet her lightly theres a lot of hair that comes out. She doesnt have any ball spots or anything. Why is this happening?

Hello,

I am sorry your new kitty is shedding so much. Some cats shed what seems to be an excessive amount of hair, which is really normal for them. It is very common for cats to shed more when they are nervous or stressed out, and I suspect that this may be what is going on with your little girl. Even if this kitty seems to be adjusting well and is acting otherwise normally, she can still be experiencing some stress. Cats instinctively hide illness and can appear perfectly happy while they are sick or stressed.

There are some parasites and illnesses that can be responsible for excessive hair loss in cats, but typically there are some balding areas in these cases. However, some of these problems can be contagious to people and other animals (the fungal infection ringworm, or the mange mites notoedres) so a check up by the vet is a good idea just to make sure nothing too serious is going on. Please consider taking your kitty to the vet for an exam and let me know if I can be of further assistance. If this has been helpful, please hit the green accept button. Good luck with your little girl, I hope nothing too serious is going on.
