Question

I purchased a kitten for $70 from a pet supply shop; it was labeled as an American Shorthair and looked typical. As it grew it became more "foreign-bodied" and well-defined stripes began to appear. I did some research, and he matched every possible standard I can find for the Mau:
-"eyeliner" stripes from the corners of eyes, which are bright green, round and slightly slanted
-an M-shaped array on the forehead which consolidates into a solid bar as it travels over the entire spine to the black-tipped tail
-ringed tail that transitions into vividly striped thighs, which merge with broken bands around the torso, which merge with stripes on the front legs
-each hair is silver at the base, then fawn, then black
-belly is more fawn colored than rest of body and has black "vest buttons"
-paw pads and lips are solid black
-nose leather is brick red
-head is neither too round nor too wedge-shaped
-paws are rounded
Also, he is nearly identical to every source image I can find. Thanks!

Hello Emily,

Congrats on the kitty! It sounds like you have done alot of research, and your kitty may in fact be a Mau. It is going to be somewhat difficult to determine the actual breed unless you can locate a vet that offers DNA testing. This is a relatively new series of tests that are available, and only a handful of vets have the capability to perform it. As far as I know, there is no listing of vets that offer this service for you, so unfortunately you will need to call around to if you are interested. If you live near a university or veterinary specialists, I would try those hospitals first. Please let me knhow if I can be of further assistance. If this has been helpful, please hit the green accept button. Good luck!
