Question

I have a 2005 28' Airstream International CCD. This winter the 12VDC lights started to dim, and even when plugged into 120V shore power the 12V lights are very dim and the furnace fan will not run. I have checked the fuses in the panel with a Digital meter they are all good, the 110V outlets work great. I have taken the batteries out of the picture by removing them could this be part of the problem? I have checked the voltage on the converter panel it reads 13.8 VDC on the two wires on the front of the panel. How do I tell if i need new batteries or a new converter?

I have taken the batteries out. I think they are bad. I have tested the panel with a digital volt meter it says 13.8V, I have checked the 12V fuses with the meter they all seem fine. I am using a Fluke Digital meter. I really need help figuring out if it is my converter or my batteries. Should I replace the batteries? If I do replace the batteries how do I know they are charging correctly?

Thanks for any and all your help and ideas.

Answer

Hi, this is Michael, as a rule it is not a good idea to remove the batteries. The reason for this is that it helps to filter out the a/c sine wave being converted into dc. Its not a perfect situation, so the batteries flatten out the line. If the converter is showing a charge voltage, 13.8, next question is what is the voltage at the light fixture, this will tell the story.......The thinking here is when the converter is at 'idle' it may appear to be normal, yet when it is under a load it faulters. Also are two sides to the fuse panel from the converter, one is straight up converted voltage, the other is filtered for use with electronics ex: radio, lpg leak detector ect.................Do the test, and get back to me........Are the batteries over or near 5 yrs old??????????

I got new batteries today and the batteries installed are reading 12.70VDC with the RV plugged into shore power is this normal or does it sound like the inverter may be not working properly?

Accepted Answer

Hi, sorry for the delay. With the new batteries, 12.7 may be a good idle voltage for the inverterer. Do this, ck the batteries every 8 hours to see if they are maintaining. The reason for this is as the batteries are fully charged as new, they wont be 'calling' for charge, what were looking for is either a stable 12.7, or an increase. Write them down on a piece of paper for future referance.................Michael. The other thing to do is ck the voltage, then unplug the unit from shore power, and see if there is a change.
