Question

Firefox recently updated, and now won't connect. I get a message "Failed to Connect: Firefox can't establish a connection to the server at [website]" As one of the suggestions for fixing the problem, I downloaded Spybot S&D, but that installation can't complete because it can't connect to its server either. I was able to install SUPERAntiSpyware, but that also can't access the internet to get updated definition files. TurboTax has likewise been unable to connect automatically. But IE connects fine, as does Quicken. Symantec and AntiSpyware turned up nothing but cookies, and I've turned off Windows Firewall, but the pattern persists.

Hi,

Could you specify the antivirus/security program, if any, currently present in your system?

SUPERAntiSpyware and Symantec AntiVirus are installed. the Spyware program was installed after the problem first occurred.

Answer

Okay ..first off, please uninstall the Norton antivirus from your system, reboot and check if you can get Firefox to connect all right now. If so, you may simply reinstall the antivirus, without it causing any further issues.

Keep me posted.

Regards

Answer

An update ..please download the Norton Removal Tool using the following link:
http://majorgeeks.com/downloadget.php?id=4749&file=15&evp=242a1882161556089131482b8e4a8e42
Done that, run the tool to look for and remove any traces of Norton still present in your system, since removing it normally may/may not work for you; thereafter reboot and check if your issue with Firefox still persists.

Let me know how it goes.

After uninstalling Norton, my laptop refused to connect to the router at all. I have done a system reinstall (exactly what I was hoping to avoid). But the problems are gone.
