Question

We have a 12 year old gray/silver male tabby. Recently he has developed small black dots on the green colored area of his eyes. The right eye has one and the left eyes has two.

Optional Information

Age: 12; Male; Breed: Silver/Gray Tabby Domestic Cat

Already Tried:
Nothing...Just want to know if this is causing pain to cat or if it impairs his vision (indoors or outside- day or night). He is an inside/outside cat and would not be happy if he stayed inside all the time.

Can anything be done to help his eyes or is he OK.

Again - all I see is one small black dot (about the size of a freckle in his right eye on the green iris area and two slightly larger black dots in the left eye on the green iris area with one very close or touching the black pupil area. He is a 12 year old neutered male silver/gray tabby.

Answer

Hello,

As cats age they experience a wide range of changes. Some of those changes are benign, and some indicate illness. Some cats will undergo pigment changes on their skin, gums and even their eyes. This is most likely nothing to worry about, but given the age and indoor/outdoor status of your kitty, I think that a trip to the vet is a good idea. Cats are considered to be geriatric at 8 years and and can be prone to illness as they age. The 3 most common ailments known to afflict elderly cats are diabetes, kidney disease and hyperthyrodism. While the pigment changes you are seeing in your cats eyes are not typical symptoms of any of the above illnesses, the eyes can be affected in many ways, particularly in a diabetic kitty. The fact that your kitty spends some time outside concerns me because he may be showing some very subtle signs of illness that while hard to notice in an indoor cat would be almost impossible to notice in a kitty that does go outside. At some point in the near future I think that a trip to the vet for an exam and some blood and urine tests would be a good idea to screen for potential illness. Even if everything comes back normal you have established base line values which will be very valuable if kitty ever become sick. Please let me know if I can be of further assistance. If this has been helpful, please hit the green accept button. Good luck!

You did not indicate if the spots cause pain or impair vision.

He gets regular check ups and is inspected when he gets in fight and gets banged up a bit.

If he is diabetic - would I see any recognizable symptoms?

Answer

So sorry. No there are typically no impairments in vision and no discomfort. Typical symptoms of diabetes include vomiting, diarrhea, increased water consumption, increased urination, dehydration, weakness, weight loss, muscle wasting, poor hair coat, changes in appetite, changes in behavior and increased vocalizations. Cats instinctively hide illness, so symptoms can be hard to spot at times :)
