Question

What size generator would it take to power an XE78 gas furnace? I Know it is 115 Volts and 8.5 amps so that comes out to about 980 watts if so would a 1000 watt generator power the furnace? Thanks for you help Mac

Hi,

 

Typically a generator should be sized to carry 125% of the expected load. A 1000 watt generator will run the furnace but not within the 25% safety overload factor.

 

Your expected load is basically 1000 watts so a 25% overage puts you at a 1250 watt machine but typically the next step up will be a 1500 watt machine.

 

I would go with the higher wattage generator, as there may also be peripherals to the furnace such as humidifiers and possibly electronic air cleaners, condensate pumps etc...

 

1000 watts is not enough for your application.
