Question

I'm noticing an odor that I think is coming from my cats ear/s. There is no drainage obvioius from the outside, but when folding back the ears I think there may be something there. Looks like wax? She doesn't scratch or shake her head that we've noticed, but does seem to cry more often than her sister. She is American Shorthair, 16 months, was examined by our vet last month when she went in for Rabies vax. There was nothing at that time. Is there something I can do or is this another trip to the vet?

Hi
The odour may simply be caused by a build up of ear wax and you can use an ear cleaning solution available from pet suppplies and your vet (no visit required). You simply apply a few drops into each ear canal, massage the canal (just below the ear hole) and then wipe away the dissolved wax as it surfaces with some tissues. Don't use cotton buds or insert anything into the canal.
However sometimes the smell can result from an ear infection (otitis externa). The signs of an ear infection include:
1. Pain when the eras are handled.
2. Signs of irritation (hanging the head over, flicking the ears)
3. Rededning of the inside of the ear flap.
4. A nasty smell from the ear canal.
5. Abnormal material seen in the canal....normal wax is a light to dark brown colour.
Check that she doesn't have any of these signs and if not, obtain the ear cleanser and get to work.
I hope I have been of assistance.
Regards, XXXXX
