Question

I'd like to know if the medications (like Revolution for cats) on the website "PET SHED.com" are the real thing and safe and effective for my cats? PetMeds.com is another website...are these websites selling the same medication as my vet? My vet tells me that I'd have to sign a waiver for them to write my cats a prescription to get meds from these websites because they have "concerns" about the meds and their effectiveness. I don't want to jeapordize my cats health just to save a few bucks, but if it's the same thing, it would be nice to save some money as I spend a lot of money on my kitties' vet bills, prescription food, ect. Thanks for your help. Caryn

Hello Caryn-

There has been some concern regarding prescription drugs sold via internet pharmacies. The concerns are: pharmacies that give clients the medications without a prescription, pharmacies not being licensed to sell the medications in your particular state, and medications being obtained illegally (and therefore no guarantees on quality) by these pharmacies.

Some manufacturers promise to only sell medications to vets, but then an internet pharmacy will start selling the same medication....and that begs the question: where did it come from?

I have never had a bad personal experience with any internet pharmacy, however, it is true that most state veterinary boards are recommending vets have clients sign a waiver. Unfortunately, no one can tell you for sure there won't be problems, because vets have no control or relationship with these pharmacies.

If you were to go through one, I would pick one that has been around a while and that you have heard of. It might be a good idea to ask your friends/co-workers with pets if they have ever used an internet pharmacy and their experiences/recommendations. The only one I have heard of is 1-800 Pet Meds. I know they have been in serious trouble for selling without a proper prescription but I have not heard of any problems with the products. Remember, I am only one person though :)

On a side note, do your cats go outdoors and have problems with fleas or hunting year round? The reason I ask is because in our area, it freezes during the winter and parasites aren't a problem Nov-April. I always try to minimize drugs to just what is really needed. Of course, do what is best for your part of the country.

Let me know if I can do anything else. Thanks for your question.

I live in PA, so it does get cold here in the winter, but I do not ever let my cats outdoors. They are indoor cats only, but my vet said indoor cats can get heartworm too. Is that right? What months would yoou recomend to apply revolution?
