Question

My cats, 2-5 mos olds and a 3 yr old MAY have ingested decon. The landlord had it up in the ceiling (unbeknownst to us) and we had a leak today and the ceiling tile fell as did the decon. I can't be sure they ate any or even played w/ it but what do I do? My Vets is closed and the emergency vet is far away. Should I try to get there or is ther something I can watch for that would not make it to late for them?

Hello XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX,

This is Dr. Christian. Do you know what the active ingredient is? It should say on the box if you have access to it. If they did eat it, how long ago would that have been? Any vomiting? How much do they weigh?

The mom is about 7 lbs, Male (kitten) - maybe 7 - 8, and the female kitten 5 (runt of litter). No vomiting. Happened about 40 min ago. (Sorry, the net is slow tonight)

That's okay, no problem. You can give hydrogen peroxide to make them vomit if you'd like (about 1/2 teaspoon every 10-15 minutes until they vomit. However, understanding decon is important to understanding the poisoning. Most decon works by preventing blood clotting as the drug works it way in to the system. Many heart patients take a low dose of a form of decon (blood thinners) to minimize heart attacks. Treatment involves getting the drug out of their system with vomiting, binding the drug still in their GI tract with charcoal and then giving vitamin K orally for 1-3 weeks. The vitamin K counteracts the drug and allows clotting to occur normally. Symptoms of the poisoning are difficult breathing, bruising on the skin and gums, blood in vomit, diarrhea or urine. These symptoms are all due to bleeding in to various parts of the body. If you think they truly have ingested the drug then I would recommend going to the emergency vet so that the drug can be cleared from their system as much as possible and vitamin k treatment started. If you have more questions just reply back to this.
