Question

I am experiencing a similar Nox (knock) sensor fault on my VW Golf FSI year 2004 as this guy. Herb posted the answer May 26 2008 at 3:08 AM. I would like to know where the Nox sensor is located and how can I reset the fault/system? Is it an easy job replacing the sensor? Do I need an expert to so it?

Answer

Hello and Welcome to justanswer...

You have an option to either view that answer .. to do that you need to pay the £3. as the site shows you how to do.

Or you can pay to have the answer from myself ....as this is a Pay Site..

The knock sensor is located up on the back of the engine block behind / below the inlet manifold.....and you can change it yourself --

Im a bit concerned as to whether you have the right part here though... a Knock sensor is never referred to as a "nox" sensor... but an o2 sensor maybe...

It would be as well that you get a proper explanation from the mechanic who did the diagnostic as to exactly which part was shown to be faulty...

I Sincerely XXXX X have helped you - Please ask me if you need more help...

Kind Rgds,.... MIKE

Hi Mike,

Thanks for explaining this to me. Sorry I was confused, I am thinking of the Nox, O2 or Oxygen sensor. So many names for the sensor just makes me even more confused. I would like how to know where this sensor is located and how I can reset the fault. Can I replace this sensor myself, do I need a mechanic?

Regards

Answer

Hi there - Thats no problem at all ;)

I did think you may have meant that .... You are right - with all the sensors, names etc can get confusing , I fully agree!

Im sure on the Golf its on the front downpipe -- but its easy to find - Just start at the very front of the exhaust system....look down the piping and you will come across it... you will see it screwed into the exhaust - with wires coming from it to a simple connector..

Some cars have two - yours has one I believe - in any event - its the one nearest the front you want...

You can replace the sensor yourself - there are special designed sockets available to fit the sensors passing the wires... You can get them for about £10. from car shops or motor tool shops - even on line... Do a search for Lambda Sensor Sockets or "tools" on ebay or google -- They are a deep socket with a slot in the side - ( so that you can recognise it when you see it )...

The sensors can be in very tight --so you do usually need a socket and sometime some heat from a good blow torch ...

Once you fit a new one - the light should go out again in its own... If not - you can try a disconnection of the battery for 30 mins to reset the ecu.... or , last resort - a diagnostic tool to do it -- but usually you don't end up having to use one...

I Sincerely XXXX X have helped you - Please ask me if you need more help...

Some web sites lists both, oxygen sensors and lambda sensors, some dealers I spoke to thinks its the same thing or don't know what I am talking about?

Regards,

Manted

Hi again...

Indeed - Oxygen sensor - Lamda sensor - o2 sensor -- All one and the same ;)

Try this link HERE -- you will get one at a good price here.. but when ordering , tell them you want a DIRECT FIT one ---- Not a Universal one !! ( Universal ones need "wiring " in ... direct fit ones just plug straight in to the electrical socket you have got on the car )

Hi Mike,

Thanks for your advice on sorting my Nox Sensor problem. I got a second hand Nox Sensor from a Motor Breaker as this sensor can be a bit pricy for a new one. I have tried the website you referred to me but only registered businesses can order directly from them. I follow your instructions on how to change the sensor and how to reset the fault. I have now done almost 1.500 miles with this second hand sensor and now problems so far. In fact my golf runs smoother and has better petrol consumption.

Thanks for you help,
