Question

4 siblings one sibling of the deceased father has inherited the farm of which she has been living and spending the deceased father's funds. bills are arising and the sister who lives on the farm is demanding the other siblings to pay the bills for the estate of which they do not live. legally can this be done. it is my opinion that if she has solely inherited the estate then those are her bills. is this is correct?this is in michagen and the bills are taxes on the farm and credit card bills, food bills for which the father rarely ate as he died of cancer.please advise

Hello,

No children of a deceased are liable for any bills of the parent, unless of course they were co-signers of a loan with the decease or in some other voluntarily assumed responsibility for a loan. Creditors to the estate may, however, have a claim on the assets of the estate before anything can be distributed to heirs.

Therefore, if the entire estate was left to one child, that child would be the only one responsible for paying off the debts of the estate so that that child could claim the remainder as her inheritance. If none of the other siblings inherited anything, they have no responsibility for paying off the debts of the estate.

I hope this helps!
