Question

I am having problems with my low beam headlights. Either they don't come on or only one does. High beams work fine. Checked fuses and they are not blown. What I noticed is when low beams are turned on and a single bulb is lit, removing both fuses only dims the lit bulb. Replacing the fuses returns the single working bulb to normal.

It is a 2001 Echo with ~ 60K miles. The engine is the standard shipped with this model. The only troubleshooting so far is examining the head light fuses in the relay box in the engine compartment. I also examined the headlight switch for any loose play or possible bad connections by operating several times including low to high beam switches. Nothing appeared to be out of the ordinary.

DOes your Echo have the optional daytime running lamps?

No it doesn't.

Thank you for the reply.

Just a few more questions:

-When the issue happens do the HIGH beam lamps operate normally?

-Also you stated you can remove the h-lp fuses and the bulbs still operate?

Reply

The high beams have never failed to work correctly regardless of what the low beams do.

Here's what I did with the fuses:

1. turned low beam headlights on

2. left hand came on; right hand did not

3. pulled fuse for right hand to determine if it has blown - it was OK

4. pulled fuse for left hand to determine if it was blown - it was OK

5. after pulling the left hand fuse, the lamp remained on but not as bright

6. placed right hand fuse in left hand lamp socket - lamp returned to normal

7. placed left hand fuse in right hand lamp socket - lamp still out

8. rechecked high beams - both worked normally.

This problem was first noticed yesterday. From the limited amount of time we've seen this, the low beam operation seems intermittant - you never know what will happen when the low beams are turned on - do you get one; do you get both; do you get neither; does one or both come on or go out when driving? High beams never fail to operate regardless of what the low beams are doing.

Answer

THank you for the detailed reply. A few thoughts here.I have been reviewing the electrical wiring schematic here. You stated that one lamp remained partially lit with BOTH fuses pulled. If the wiring was not an issue on this circuit this could not happen, these 2 fuses are the only power sources for the high and low beams. Several electricla tests need to be performed, I have a feeling you may have an internal junction block issue where these fuses are installed. Do you have a volt meter and are you capable of running some tests if I provide the needed information?

I do have a volt meter but may need some additional guidance as to where to test. I'm more of a visual person when it comes to cars.

Thanks for the reply, this will require some in depth electrical diagnostics then when the problem happens to pinpoint the cause. I loaded the needed information to the links below:

Any suggestions where to begin or just use the diagrams to trace the issue?

Answer

I would use the diagrams to test the switch as indicated and then test the power points of the low beam bulbs. Let me know if you need specifics on this, the bottom of the schematic has good service specifications.
