Thanks for the question XXXXXXXXX.

While obviously I cannot be sure without examining your puppy's eye I can tell you that the most likely condition which would cause these symptoms would be a conjunctivitis.

There is nothing much you can do for this on a home treatment basis but you could start gently cleaning and flushing the eye out with warm water until you can get him to a vet. Many of these are bacterial infections and antibiotic eye drops are the usual treatment.

My personal preference is to use chloramphenicol eye drops as a first line measure, say three drops, four times a day for four or five days. There are other antibiotics found in eye drops which work well too.

I am sorry that I cannot offer any home remedy here, the eye is a delicate structure and damage can quickly follow if you do the wrong thing. Accordingly my advice to you has to be to get your dog to the vet and have him or her check the eye make sure it is indeed an conjunctivitis and if appropriate prescribe a suitable antibiotic drop. There are of course a number of other possible diagnosis these could include allergies, foreign objects in the eye such as grit or even eye ulcers.

In your response you said that I could gently cleaning and flushing his eyes with warm water. Sould I slowly pour the water over his eyes, or should I use a damp, warm cloth to wipe his eyes? Thank you for all of your assistance in this matter.

Answer

Hello again,

You would do no harm by gently flushing the eyes with warm water, do this at a short distance from the eyes.

Regards,

Scott
