Question

Our 8 week-old southern flying squirrel got his tail caught, resulting in a degloving-type injury to the tip of his tail. Has about 1cm of tail bone extending beyond fur. Does the bone need to be snipped to avoid infection or will the tail heal as is? He seems fine otherwise: playing, eating, drinking, etc...

LeCroy, thanks for using our service.

Having the tip of the tail amputated would be the best choice for avoiding infection. Most veterinarians use sevo or isoflurane to make the pet sleepy and the procedure takes about 20 minutes. Your veterinarian may also want to try an round of antibiotics to be certain the chance of infection is low. Good luck!
