Question

We have a puppy, about 13 weeks old. She began vomitting this afternoon and has thrown up quite a bit and is now having a lot of diarrhea. Do we need to get her care right away or should we call our vet in the morning. Also, could whatever she has possibly be contagious to humans? Thank you for your help.

Optional Information

Breed: mini-dachsund

Already Tried:
We have not fed her anything since she began throwing up. We have given her a little bit of fresh water. We are keeping her in her kennel and are trying to keep her calm and quiet. She was fine this morning. Ate her breakfast just fine. I did not see her eat anything unusual. She is either in her kennel or playing in the kitchen when I am in there. There was nothing on the floor for her to eat. I went out for a couple of hours, she was in her kennel. When I got home she began throwing up. The first couple of times it was all of her dog food and after that she has thrown up liquid, maybe bile about 10-12 times. She has not vomited for a couple of hours, but has now had about 4-5 rounds of diarrhea. She is a little quieter than usual, but not lethargic.

Info Request

Hi katherine louise,
How many times has she vomitted today?
When was her last episode of vomitting?
Is she lethargic, or is she alert and active?
Is she up-to-date on her vaccinations?
If you lift her upper lip and touch her gums above her teeth, are they wet, dry or sticky?

She has vomitted about 10-12 times today. She has not vomitted for a couple of hours now, but in the last 30 minutes has had about 4-5 rounds of diarrhea. She is not as active as usual, but she is not lethargic. She is up to date on her vaccinations. Her gums are definitely not wet. You might consider them a little dry and sticky, but not very much.

Accepted Answer

She sounds like a very sick puppy. This amount of vomiting and diarrhea has now contributed to her dehydration, and she really should be taken to an emergency clinic tonight to be examined and rehydrated.

There are many reasons why a dog would vomit this much. The most common include gastrointestinal obstruction with a foreign body (such as a sock, or a piece of a toy), intusussception (obstruction of the intestines when they telescope in on themselves), gastric dilatation and volvulus (twisted stomach), toxic ingestion, gastrointestinal infectious disease (viral, bacterial, etc..), kidney disease, liver disease, pancreatitis, or a simple dietary indiscretion. Differentiating these illnesses requires a physical examination by a veterinarian and blood and urine laboratory testing, plus abdominal X-rays.

I hope that this information is of help to you, and I wish you the best of luck with your puppy. Please let me know if I can be of further assistance.
