Info Request

Hi XXXXXXX,

What type of food are you feeding currently (canned or dry)?
If you lift her lip and touch her gums above her teeth, are they wet, dry or sticky?
Is she active and playful?
Is she urinating normally?

Hi Dr K, the pup belongs to my son, I have just text him your questions, I am a bit concerned that the pup has left its mother so early what do you think?

Answer

Six weeks old is very young to leave the mother. Most breeders will not allow their puppies to be sold until they reach 8 weeks of age. Often, the puppies found at pet stores are younger than this age, because these puppies do not come from responsible breeders, but rather from large puppy mills in the midwest. This may have been the case with your son's puppy. If so, it would not be surprising that she is ill.

apparently the owner told my son to giver the pup dry food ,that she was feeding it on, I think the pup is too young for dry food, today they brought sachet puppy food and milk, she seems to be drinking the milk now, the pup seems to be playful and uriating aswell,

Accepted Answer

If she is separated from her mother...then she should not need puppy milk replacer. This is for younger, still nursing puppies, and you should not feed this to her. She should be encouraged to drink regular water. If she is urinating normally and is playful, then she is getting the amount of moisture she needs. Dry food is an acceptable food to feed young puppies, and puppies that eat this type of food will usually drink more than puppies fed canned food. Both types are fine.

I hope that this answers your questions. Please let me know if I can be of further assistance.
