Answer

So nice of you for prompt response. I appreciate it.

Normal value of protein in urine in 24 hour urine sample is 150 mg/24 hours.

If your urine showed more than 1400 mg/24 hours of protein, that is called proteinuria or in simple words , protein is being spilled in the urine from blood.

Inability of kidneys to prevent this much protein loss in urine is called nephrotic syndrome.

Ongoing increased loss of protein in urine causes decrease in level of blood protein as it is spilled through kidneys and poured out. This low protein in blood leads to decreased oncotic pressure and body can not keep water inside blood vessels and it starts oozing out in areas like legs, under eyes, in abdominal cavity etc.

in severe cases, whole body gets puffy swelling with water under skin tissue.

Now why are you getting this much loss of protein in urine?

There could be several reasons for increased protein loss through kidneys in urine.

uncontrolled diabetes

uncontrolled blood pressure

certain drugs

certain tumors

Multpiple myeloma( type of blood cancer mostly associated with lower back pain)

heavy metal poisons etc.

Increased loss of protein is not disease itself, but it is indication of underlying disease which must be diagnosed as soon as possible as the treatment is based on the underlying cause.

Please feel free to ask more if not clear.

Kindest regards and best wishes for your health and safety.

I have had low GFR's for a couple of years and my doctor never discussed this me. I found out when I went to the emergency room for high blood pressure. Over the past month it has been difficult to regulate blood pressure. I am not diabetic. I have been having severe pain in my diaphragm and mid back arounf the rib cage. I wonder if this is related to my kidney function. My doctor has referred me to a specialist whom I won't see for 17 days. I am concerned I am in the late stages of renal failure.

Answer

Thank you.

It is true that your kidneys have been damaged functionally quite enough.

If you are having pain in ribs etc , multiple myeloma must be ruled out immediately.

Such a huge loss of protein in urine does not happen overnight and it takes lot of time to progress to this stage. But to prevent further progress and damage, it should be evaluated and managed as early as possible.

Your primary doctor should order and perform all the necesary tests before consultation with specialist in order to expedite the evaluation process because time factor is more important here.

Best wishes

Thank you! My doctor has not seemed too concerned about this until I brought it to her attention. I am in hopes that the specialist will provide some answers. I am staying with my daughter right now, but would like to return to an assisted living environment. I just don't know what to expect over the next year.
