Hello,

A strong contraction of the Quadriceps muscle, that is the muscle that is connected to the patella ( knee cap ) can cause a soft tissue injury / tear of the sinovial membrane.

This type of swelling can also be caused by a ligament / meniscal injury.

You need to see a doctor, preferably an Orthopedician for an evaluation, if a tear is clinically suspected, having an MRI done would point the site of the tear and treatment can be planned accordingly.

Until then, please keep your knee elevated while sleeping, with pillows for support under your knee and continue the icing, that will help reduce the swelling and pain. A tylenol / motrin can help with the pain.

Kindest Regards,

Dr.Joshi
