Question

my cockatiel has no voice this morning, she was very vocal yesterday. She seems fine behaviour wise and is still eating and drinking as normal. Could you tell me why this has happened and whether you have heard of this before?

Hi XXXXXXXXXXXX,

Thanks for your question.

I'm sorry to hear that you are having problems with your tiel.

It certainly is possible that she may be a bit 'horse' from yesterday but I would expect her sound to return quickly. Birds are designed to be vocal, so being 'horse' is not common.

The issue I'm more concerned about is the possibility of something like a foreign body (seed or other piece of food) or granuloma (often from a fungal infection) at her syrinx. The syrinx is located at the base of her trachea (windpipe) where it splits off going to the right and left lungs. This area is where the sound comes from, so if there is something lodged in this area, change in vocalizations can occur.

It is good to know that she is still feeling okay, however, you need to watch her breathing very closely. If her breathing pattern starts to change, it could signal she is having problems.

I would recommend you consider taking her into a vet who sees birds just to be safe. If you do not know of a vet you can search www.aav.org or let me know where you live and I may be able to help with a referral.

Take care,

Dr. G
