2000vwjetta,

What engine do you have in your Jetta? Then I can tell you what the procedure is.

Answer

Ok so the gasket material is a special sealant only available at VW, it's around $50 a bottle. I've seen people use other sealant available from the parts store, but it usually leaks.

You drain the oil and then remove all the 10mm bolts facing upwards into the block. Then you remove the three 16mm bolts that go from the transmission into the oil pan. Drop the pan, scrape the pan and the block and clean the gasket material off. Put the new sealant on the pan and reinstall the 10 mm bolts and torque them to 10 neuton meters. Just make sure the three 16mm bolts going sideways into the pan are tight.

how long do I wait, to allow the sealant to setup, before I put the pan back on the block. And how many in/lbs. or ft/lbs does 10 newton/meters equal.

Forget the second question. Sorry about that bone head question. I looked at my torque wrench and figured that one out myself.

Accepted Answer

As far as setting up you bolt the pan up when you get done putting the sealant on, no waiting necessary. Just rewipe the block when you're done because even if you wipe the block down at the mating surface before putting the sealant on the pan, by the time you're done there will be oil on there again. The only thing you are supposed to wait for is like an hour after putting the pan on to fill oil and start the engine.

If I've helped please remember to hit accept so I will be compensated. If you have any more questions let me know.
