Question

I have a lop rabbit. He does not have any kind of inner ear infection, but he has about a quarter sized circle outside of his ear (right below it)that does not have any hair on it anymore and it was very light pink with a very small scab a day ago, but i see he is scratching it making it much pinker, maybe even causing it to bleed a bit. Can I put something on it?

Optional Information

Age: 4; Male; Breed: Lop Rabbit

Already Tried:
I have not tried anything yet. Rabbits are so sensitive to medicines I was afraid to do anything until I got a good answer. I need to be able to do something so that I don't have to take off work to go to the vet (if at all possible). Thanks.

Hi-

How do you know that he doesn't have an inner ear infection?

He could have an outer ear infection. The most common reason for scratching at the ear is ear mites.

As for the small patch of hair loss which seems to you like it is itching, there are a couple of small skin tumors which can appear as small pink raised/smooth areas.

Topical medicines would be silver sulfadiazine. Do not use anything with neomyicin.

If the scratching persists, go to your vet and get it checked out.

I hope this information is helpful.

Where can I buy silver sulfadiazine? How much do I put on the spot?

Answer

Hi-

The silver sulfadine can probably be purchased at a pet store, but certainly a vet should carry it. It is available without a prescription. Just place a small amount all over the affected area once or twice daily, usually for about 7-10 days. If that doesn't remedy the situation, you probably have a more serious problem which should be checked by a professional.

I hope this has helped.

Well I have called several pharmacies and pet stores to track down some silver sulfadiazine cream, but the pharmacies all say I need a prescription and the pet stores don't carry it. I did have a pet store suggest a couple items they did have: coloidial silver spray and Buddy Boo Boo cream. Would either of these work or will I have to make an appointment with a vet to get the prescription?

Answer

Hi-

Here's a link on Amazon.com. 1% silver sulfadizaine cream

It is a common remedy for burns. If you get it this way, you don't have to go to the vet.
