Question

My 11 year old whippet is in pain. Earlier today when getting out for a walk he pulled hard on his leash that his (wide hound) collar opened and fell off. I didn't think much of it then. He is miserable, yelps when hid neck is felt, allows gentle holding of the neck. Went for the short evening walk to do his business with his head down. Otherwise he is in good health. Earlier today had loose stool, didn't eat later, evening stool fine. Can I give him something for pain? Should we take him in the morning to on call pet hospital? Please advise?

Optional Information

Age: 11; Male; Breed: whippet

Already Tried:
Just gently petting him for comfort. He is calm, too calm, would not give me "a kiss" as he would when I ask for it, or just for petting him before turning in to sleep.

Info Request

Hi,

Is he on any Medications for pain or other problems?

Can he move the neck?

Is there pain anywhere except for the neck?

No medication. The neck is not stiff, he can move it, but seems to be sparing himself of much movement. I have moved him gently. He yelped when both my husband and I touched a painful spot on the neck. First I though it is the stomach, because of earlier diarrhea, but yelping at petting the neck repeated. Probably not anywhere else.

Accepted Answer

Hi,

Since he is not on any medication and does not seem to have any bleeding problems, we can give a low dose of Plain Aspirin after giving a small snack or food. This is given at 5mgs per pound of body weight every 12 hours for pain for a total of two days max. You can apply some heat to the area. If you do not have a heating pad, you can make a heat sock out of uncooked rice in a sock and heated in a microwave. Apply the heat sock to the neck to help relieve the pain. This is basic first aid and not meant to replace a vet visit. I suggest keep him as quiet as possible to allow the area to feel better. Make sure you do not give any Motrin, Aleve, Tylenol, Excederin or any other Nsaids since they can be very toxic to dogs. Joan
