Question

What are a few ways to determine if my fuel pump is bad on my 2001 Silverado 2500HD? Right now, it will not start or even begin to 'catch' but does run with starter fluid in the intake. Early symptoms included a fluctuating fuel level sender. Can these pumps be bench tested?

Answer

Hi Vaquero_Roberto I will try to help. I have had pretty good luck smacking the fuel tank with the hammer to get it running again. You could bench test it by applying power & ground to the pump itself to see if it runs. Hope this helps.

Hadn't thought of a hammer. I do have a bit more information. I ran a check using an OBD reader and received an error code of P0300-- which relates to random misfires. However, since the truck won't start, I can't really have a misfire. (ignition system works fine using starting fluid).

Is this a good clue?

Answer

Your right. we need to get it running. Try smacking the tank. If it starts after that you will still need a pump. It the pumps not running after that you will have to figure out if you have power & ground at the pump.

feel a bit sick today, got started late. No amount of banging on the tank will get it going, although it did try a few times. I'm going to drop the tank and pull the pump out. Do I accept your answer now or wait until I have a question about checking for power and ground on the pump! I'm new to the site . . .

I appreciate the help, truly
