Question
My Boo is an 11 year old male. Lately the poor little guy is sneezing alot, along with a clear nasal discharge and watery eyes. What can I do for my poor boy, aside from a trip to the vet (which he finds rather tramatic)?

Have tried mixing very minute amounts of sudefed into his wet food...seems to help but after some online research, I'm afraid of hurting my Boo.

Hi,
It sounds like maybe Boo has an upper respiratory infection caused by herpes virus. Did he have an upper respiratory infection when he was younger? As in humans, herpes virus can remain dormant until a stressful event occurs, then it comes out. In humans you get a cold sore, but in cats you get sneezing and watery eyes.
As long as the discharge from his nose and eyes is just clear and not colored, you can try some lysine. You can get L-lysine from any pharmacy, over-the-counter. It comes in 500 mg tablets. Give 1/2 tablet every 12 hours to Boo. You can crush it up and mix it with canned food to make it easier to give. Your vet may also carry a more palatable form of lysine--in a gel or paste form.
If he isn't doing better by early next week, the discharge becomes a green or yellow color, or he starts squinting his eyes or not wanting to eat, you should take him to your regular vet. He may need antibiotics.
Hope that helps!

I am not his first owner, so I'm not clear on his earlier health. I
do know that he was an outside cat before being taken in by my friend, his 1st owner. When I first "met" him, about 5 years ago he was kinda scrawny and had a terrible problem with hairballs. I started to make sure he got some fresh grass now & then, as well as started combing him several times a week and he's filled out wonderfully and has much less problems with hairballs now. But he's always, during that time, had a wet nose and watery eyes and sneezing.

I would definitely try the Lysine. He may have a chronic herpes infection that just isn't getting better. If you haven't had him tested for feline leukemia and feline AIDS, I strongly encourage you to do so. Having either of those viruses can cause a suppression of the cat's immune system, making it harder to fight off infections and make herpes virus more likely to replicate.
