Question

My peach faced love birds had 2 babies, they were a little long coming out of the nesting box, as the other birds in the aviary would hound them. I separated the family into their own area, but the larger one is fine but the smaller one can fly but not perch, its legs are splayed apart, it just sits on the floor or hangs onto the wire, what should I do, can it be rehabilitated to perch, Toni

Hello Toni,

Sometimes baby birds with splay legs can be rehabilitated. There are various causes of the condition. The greatest chance of recovery will be if you have an avian vet treat the bird. Bracing or surgery may be necessary. Here is a site that will help you find a vet near you:

Home treatment is less effective, but here is a site where you can read about what to do:

If you have more questions, just let me know by clicking on REPLY. I hope the little bird will recover.
