Info Request

do you want to build a ledge coming out from the tub? How much space is there between tub and toilet?

I don't necessarily want to build a ledge, just cover up the stark white of the tub. There is about a foot betwen tub and toilet. My handyman says I need to come out about 4 inches, but may concern is that it will make the room look even smaller. Is there a way to bond the cement board to the surface of the tub and then just tile over it?

thanks so much for your help.

Accepted Answer

I wouldn't recommend attaching directly to the tub surface. It would also be difficult to have a nice finished edge along the top of the board and tile. Build a frame out of 1 5/8" metal stud track. Frame it so that there are 4 vertical supports. 1 on each end that attach to the existing walls and 2 evenly spaced in the middle for support. Make sure you leave enough space along the top of the frame for the board and tile to be installed without going over the top edge of the tub. The bottom track can be adhered to the floor with liquid nails or another bonding adhesive. Install the greenboard and then the tile as planned. The metal frame and board will give you enough room at the top to finish with a bullnose tile. This design will only bring the tile about 2" from the tub, will look nice and didn't use a lot of space. If this has been helpful, please click accept and leave feedback at your convenience.
