Answer

The new variable speed furnaces can save a lot of money. Comfortmaker has been around awhile however I think I would be checking on a Trane, Carrier or Bryant also. You will want to compare warranties carefully as these furnaces can have expensive problems come up after the parts warranty has expired.

I wouldn't have any problem recommending the VS-90 ( Iassume this is the unit)Just make sure you all of your homework.

It is my understanding that Comfortmaker is owned by the same people as Carrier/Bryant and that the guts, etc. of their furnaces are the same as Carrier and Bryant. I'm also told that they have the best "out of the box" warranty of 7 years. I'm really interested in whether it is a good, reliable furnace or not.

Thanks

I have a HVAC guy that has done work for us and we like him and think he is good at his craft. Comfortmaker is what he is selling now. What do you think?

P.S. This is a gas furnace

Answer

Yes they are reliable. I didn't mean to imply they weren't. Comfortmaker is owned BY ICP corporation which also manufactures Heil, Arcoaire, Tempstar and a few others. ICP is owned by United Technologies which manufactures Carrier, Bryant, Payne and others. It's confusing I know. The Comfortmaker more resembles an Arcoaire. I have installed quite a few Aroaire furnaces and own one myself. I have had no major problems at all with any of them.

One last question. What are you thoughts on Fridgidaire furnaces for quality and reliabiltiy, and If you were going to install a new gas 90% efficiency variable speed furnace in your mother's home, what would you choose.

Thanks

Answer

They are good and would install in own house

Accepted Answer

There are only subtle differences between many furnace makes. MY best advice is to buy from an established dealer/contractor. Chances are they sell equipment that has a good service history. Try and stay away from buying a furnace from a home supply/DYI store. Service and parts can be harder to get as well as warranty claims.
