Question

Hello, I have an oil fired heat and hot water problem. I have a new boch water heater with a new beckett af burner with solid state ign etc. It runs fine with no problems. Nest to it is a Weil McLean Boiler also with a Becket AFG burner .75 nozzle and older transformer etc. They are both fed from the oil tank thru a 3/8 inch line and single filter with a tee on the filtered side. When both burners call for fire, the older beckett on the boiler shuts down on safety. It runs fine by itself and has a great flame etc, Electrodes and nozzle all new and adjusted etc. What can you suggest to solve this problem. Would a new pump help? Thank you Paul, PS we're due to get zero degrees here and have a new baby in the house.

Hi Paul, I'm Bob. Do you know what the firing rate is of the new water heater? If I know the BTU input I can figure it out.

Answer

Have check valves install on each seperate oil line one is stealing oil from the other

Rick is on the money here. You also need to replace your oil filter if it hasn't been done plus, Where is your tank located from the furnace?

Hi Bob thanks for the reply
I have the Manual here and it says the firing rate is .40- 3.00 gph.
I could check if you need me to what nozzle is in it now but I believe its a .75 as well
Thank you
Paul       The oil tank is only about ten feet away from the burners and is also in the basement so its heated as well. I will check the filter again, A tech was here this summer to do a tune up. I dont think he did a very good job. Canyou explain the check valve please and where it would be installed etc.
Thank you

Answer

I would just replace the filter regardless. They make inline check valves for fuel oil systems that connect (direction sensitive) in the oil line before each pump. However is there is a restriction before the burners (like the oil filter or the tank valve is not open all the way)They may not help. Your new pump is overpowering the old one so first, make sure there are no kinks, flat spots or other restrictions like that. Replace the oil filter. Then if problem continues you can try the valves. I've installed them myself and help a lot providing flow restrictions have been ruled out.

Its a Boch 32 Gallon with beckett AF burner

Answer

Reduce the nozzle size. You are firing it at nearly 140,000 BTU's. I would try it at a .60gph. with the recommended spray angle and cone type. You should find that in your paperwork. If the unit does not recover fast enough for you increase it to a .75 gph
