My heater works fine all day until the temp dips into the low 30's at night. At that point it continues to try and kick on, but shuts off just before starting to blow hot air. After trying a few times it completely stops. It got down to 62 in my house, yet the theremostat was set at 67 and the heat would not come on.
If you have pvc pipes venting your furnace outside check them for cob or spider webs , the cool damp air settles on the web and resticts airflow through it and will lock out the furnace Run a garden hose down in as far as you can and see if you pull some web out

If this is the case, why would the heater work much of the time but only give me problems when it is very cold?
More condensation do to longer heater operation. also check you condensate drain one that goes to floor drain(blow through it make sure its clear) for blockages will have the same effect on furnace operation
