Question

I have a FIV positive almost 5 year old tabby. She seems to be breathing a bit faster and shallower than normal. I put my head to my chest and did not hear anything in her lungs. My husband also thinks that her balance is off some of the time with her back legs. thank you

Info Request

Hi-

I need more information.

What is her reproductive status? Spayed?

How long has the balance been affected?

What is her vaccination history?

What do you call faster breathing? Have you timed it for a minute?

What is her appetite like?

What is her behavior? Is she acting normal or depressed, or etc.?

Reply

she is spayed

the balance problem for about the last 4 days.

her vaccination history is only rabies. that is all the shelter would give her since she is positive for FIV. they have low cost vaccines.

her appetitie is good. She is coming around to us wanting to take food off our plates.

Her behavior is good. She does not seem to be as active as normal though. I thought it was because it is cold outside.

I will go time her breathing.

between 40-50 breaths per minute. I timed he twice. they are kind of shallow breaths. I can really see her chest moving.

Accepted Answer

Hi-

Thanks for your answers. Since the problem has been going on for four days, I believe there is room for concern. Kitties are great at hiding huge problems until they are nearly depleted of energy resources. Her breathing rate is faster than normal and the fact that you really notice the rate says a lot. Her activity sounds like it is also lower than normal. There are different reasons the breathing (respiratory) rate increases. Although you can't hear anything in her chest doesn't mean that there isn't anything there since you're not using a stethoscope. In addition, not all things cause noise disturbances in the chest. l think that her FIV status potentially lowers her resistance to other disease conditions as the "I" stands for immunosuppressive. A CBC is needed at the very minium and chemistries would benefit a diagnosis. I think you need to see your vet.

Thanks,

Cattyvet
