Question

I have a seven month old male Syrian hamster. He has always been very healthy, but in the past couple of days I've noticed some worrisome changes in his behavior. He has always been very meticulous about grooming, but now isn't bothering to clean himself. He doesn't run on his wheel and remains sleeping while hunched over. He is also hunched slightly when he walks. His feces are very small and dry, and seem to cause him some pain to remove. I think he may be a bit bloated as well. We thought he might be constipated, so I added some fruit, carrot and lettuce to his food, but he doesn't want to eat. Is there anything I can do to help him? I'm really worried.

Accepted Answer

I know you offered him fruits/veggies, but did he actually eat them? I find many ill animals will not eat a new food. However, you can offer him fruit/veggie baby foods on a finger that may get him to eat and will help him to take in fluids as well. If that doesn't work, then you should see an exotic veterinarian - you can find one at www.aemv.com.

Hope this helps,
