Question

Our newly adopted kitten (who they say is around 10 months) has been licking her urethral opening quite a bit for the last couple of days. I'm worried it might mean a bladder infection. Or could it mean she is going into heat?

Optional Information

Age: <1; Female; Breed: part siamese and something

Already Tried:
She had a slight cold when adopted from the shelter. We gave her clavamox for 2 weeks. She still has the cold. The holistic vet suggested feline L-lysine, which we have been giving her. Otherwise, we haven't done anything. She eats and drinks well. Doesn't act ill. The licking just happened in the last couple of days.

Accepted Answer

Sounds suspicous for getting ready to enter her first heat cycle. However, most shelters spay before they adopt out kittens. Do you know if she was spayed?

If she is showing any other symptoms of a urinary tract infection, such as urinating frequently, straining to urinate, or urinating outside the litter box, please take her to your veterinarian for an examination and a urinalysis. Otherwise, you way want to give her a few days and see if she shows more signs of heat.

I would typically advise you to have her spayed as soon as possible if she hasn't been, but with her upper respiratory infection, it would be better to let that resolve before bringing her in for surgery.

Is she has been spayed, and goes on to show more signs of being in heat (vocalizing, rolling, raising hind quarters), then she may have an ovarian remnant, and you will need to discuss surgical options with your veterinarian.

Please keep her indoors and away from intact male cats.

Please let me know how things go!
