Question

I noticed a good sized bump like a zit at the base of my penis right where the penis and scrotem meet. I pulled the infected hair out and squeezed the zit until it popped. a day or so later I noticed it had gotten a little bigger than before so I repeated the popping but this time I had to squeeze it very hard. Now for the last few days this area has gone from the size of a pencile eraser to about 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch and is more under the skin than on top of it like before. It has mantained size for the last few days from the time I first noticed this to today has been about a week and a half. Is this just a result of the zit or have I caused myself a greater problem. It is sore to the touch but more like a bruise from the hard pinching. The skin is intact and there are no open sore areas. What the heck is this? and What should I do.

Hi,

This is a common problem, and likely started from an ingrown hair. However, when you popped the cyst, you broke the skin - which allows bacteria from the skin to enter the irritated area. Now you likely have a secondary infection causing a small abscess.

You need to see your doctor. He will give you a little lidocaine to numb the area and then drain the site for you. He'll send the fluid for culture, and start you on oral antibiotics.

If you just let this go, the infection could get much worse and lead to complications, so don't hesitate.

In the meantime, apply warm compresses to the area to get more blood there (which has infection fighting cells).

If you shave your pubic area at all, you may want to reconsider because this is often the cause.

Good luck and please click ACCEPT if this information was helpful. Thanks.
