Question

I want to submit an original manuscript to a publisher for consideration. How can I ensure that my manuscript (and my original idea) are protected..that the publisher would not be able to reject my manuscript but use the idea for his own benefit? Do I need to do something prior to sending this manuscript in to protect my property? Thanks! j

The fact that you have a copy of the manuscript and proof you sent it would give you at least a "poor man's copyright," which would give you limited protection to at least stop anyone from using it. However, you could go to the US Copyright website and copyright the manuscript with them, which would then give you full protection including the entitlement to monetary damages for unauthorized use. Go to: http://www.copyright.gov/
and you can file the copyright there, which would be my suggestion before you send it out.
