There is no make and model number. I built this myself a few years back.

I just started a couple days ago.

pushed the power button to turn it on.

System failed cpu test System won't boot I get the audio message above. I haven't change anything,It just started a few days ago. What I have done is change the heat sink and cpu cooling fan.It still gives the audio message. I put the old fan and heat sink back in after I cleaned them. The only way I could get the system to boot up was to wiggle the fan connection on the motherboard. Then it would boot up.Someone told me If it didn't have a good connection it would give that message. It seem to work but it gets harder for it to boot. After I finally got it to boot this last time I'm scared to turn off the system for fear that it won't boot anymore. I've tried to search it on the internet but there are so many forums I can't find the answer. Please help.Open for suggestions. Thanks in advance. William XXXXX@XXXXXX.XXX

What is the motherboard that you have installed?

Answer

It sounds like you have the ASUS AV8 motherboard. Here is a link to a discussion on it.

There seems to be issues with the sensors on these boards. IT doesnt mean that the CPU is bad, there is a whole array of things that are tested when the machine boots up. It will check the CPU and the fan along with all other initialization processes.

ASUS P4C800-E Deluxe

Answer

On that motherboard the first thing to try is to unhook the ide cables on the drives, try to boot it again. IF it boots a drive is bad, This particular board reports any bios initialization problems as a CPU failure. You can do that same test with other items that plug into the board, expansion cards, extra ram, etc

I should power it down before I unplug it from the motherboard.

Then if it gives the same message how will I know if it's the drive being unpluged or the same old problem? You shouldn't unplug or mess with anything before you turn it off.You could short something if you try that.

Accepted Answer

That was my bad, I assumed that you would know to power it off before unplugging the IDE, You have an enigma, unplug just the IDE and start it, if there is no error then plug it back in, if there is an error then try one drive only. You can narrow it down that way. If it is the fan connection look for loose pins on the motherboard.
