Question

My dog was playing in the backyard, running and jumping like he does when the other neighbors' dogs are outside in their yards too. Whatever he did, caused him to hurt his front left leg very badly. My husband and I were not outside with him and he heard these terrible very loud cries from him. My husband carried our 80lb mix dog (lab, newfoundland, retriever and husky) into the house and we were able to determine that he is hurting himself in what we are calling the "elbow" bend of his leg. In the last part of 2008 there were a couple of times we cam home from work and he was limping very badly and trying not to put pressure on that same leg but it would go away after a week. We think he has reinjured that same leg. Is there anything you can suggest that we can do to help Caesar. We finally have him laying down on his bed and we are just sitting with him and trying to make him comfortable.

Optional Information

Age: 10; Male; Breed: Mix

Already Tried:
Mix: Lab, Newfoundland, Retriever and Husky. We just have him laying down on his bed inside the house. We gave him an aspirin inside a piece of cheese to help with the pain and my husband and I are just staying with him and stroking him to make him feel better.

Of course the best thing to do would be to bring Caesar to the vet so they can examine him, the will likely do xrays to looks for any joint effusion, fractured bones, or arthritis. THey will then place him on an anti-inflammatory such as Rimadyl and likely an additional pain medication. It is very important that you keep him cage rested and only let out to go to the bathroom, on a leash. He should be crated for atleast 2 weeks to allow inflammation to subside. If this isn't possible at the moment, then I would suggest you do the cage rest and ice this elbow a few times per day. you can give him buffered aspirin at a dose of 5mg/pound twice daily, but ONLY if you are not able to take him to a vet in the next few days, and he is not currently on any other medications or has any blood problems. Give this with food, and discontinue if any vomiting or dark colored stool occur. I hope this helps give you some direction with your big guy! Take care and let me know if you have any further questions.
