Question

I am confused about the dosage of Vitamin D and Calcium my gyno prescribed. I'm 54 and starting perimenopause (skipped periods only so far). She prescribed 10000 UI tablet once per week, calcium tablets 1000 Ui per day (even the pharmacist was surprised and reconfirmed dosage with my doctor). I am scheduled for a bone density test in March. On average, I drink 2 to 3 glasses of skim milk a day, 1 oz. cheese daily, fish 2 to 3 x per week, at least 4-6 green vegetables daily. I am worried that the tablets are very high...is it possible to overdose ...I didn't start taking the vit. D nor calcium, I'm scared it's too much from everything I read...What do you think, is it safe to take this much? Thank you very much for your time to answer.

Answer

Hello cici-

10 000 units of vit D per week , at least for the first couple months, would not be a toxic dose if you have low baseline vitamin D levels- Beyond that, it may actually be a bit high. A more standard dose is 600- 1000 units per day-

The below link quotes 2000 U per day as the maximal recommended , so taken daily rather than weekly, your amount should not be dangerous.

For calcium 1000 mg per day is indeed standard dosing and not abnormal.

I think the pharmacist may have made you more concerned than necessary- these doses are not very unusual. The other thing with calcium and vit D, is they are easily measured in blood tests- After being o your current dose for a few months, you should be retested.

Good luck.

Thank you, however my doctor prescribed 1 tablet a week that is 10000 U not a daily dosage. Is this OK, in your opinion? (your reply mentions taken daily rather than weekly is not a problem ).

I have reverified my prescription, I made an error on the dosage for calcium. It is a tablet containing 500 calcium plus 400 Vit. D daily. Now my concern is the calcium seems fine however if I take 10000 of Vit D weekly plus another 400 daily of Vit. D this equals to 12800 of Vit D per week....is this not too much Vit. D for someone who has not even been diagnosed with osteoporosis?

I apologize for my error in the info I provided.

Thank you.

Accepted Answer

Yes- 10 000 U per week should be OK, instead of the daily dosing I noted.

If you additionally are taking an extra 400 IU per day, that may well be excessive.

Unless we knew you were severely deficient to begin with, I would not take the extra 400 iu per day.

Good luck.
