Question

I'm taking a college Algebra class, and haven't done this math in over a decade. I've tried to work through it myself, but I don't seem to get it and need some help. 1. write an equation on the line containing the given point and parallel to the given line. answer must be in the y=mx + b form. (=4,5) 6x=5y + 2    2. write an equation on the line containing the given point and perpendicular to the given line (6,7) 8x + y=9        3. write an equation on the line containing the given point and perpendicular to the given line (2, -3) 8x + 7y=2

(1) Is the point (-4, 5)?

Any line parallel to 6x = 5y + 2 is of the form 6x = 5y + k. This passes through (-4, 5).

Therefore, 6(-4) = 5(5) + k. This gives k = -24 - 25 = -49.

The line is 6x = 5y - 49 or y = (6/5)x + (49/5).

(2) Any line perpendicular to 8x + y = 9 is of the form x - 8y = k. This passes through

(6, 7). Therefore, 6 - 8(7) = k. This gives k = 6 - 56 = -50.

The line is x - 8y = -50 or y = (1/8)x + (50/8).

(3) Any line perpendicular to 8x + 7y = 2 is of the form 7x - 8y = k. This passes through

(2, -3). Therefore, 7(2) - 8(-3) = k. This gives k = 14 + 24 = 38.

The line is 7x - 8y = 38 or y = (7/8)x + (-38/8).
