Question

I have a 2002 Suzuki XL7 and need to replace the right valve cover gasket. How easy will this be? Looks like the Valve cover is easily accessible? How parts do I have to remove to get the cover off?

Optional Information

2002 Suzuki XL7 6 Cylinder

Already Tried:
I notice the smell of oil burning. I have a slow oil leak. I checked the oil pan and no leak there. I looked at the right valve cover and seems to be going along the pan. I believe the gasket need to be changed. I does look easy to change. However I do want to get an idea of exactly what parts I have to remove to get the pan free. Thanks for your help. I am on a limited bugdet and need other repairs as well. I hope I can save some labor costs on this.

Hello I will answer your question,

The intake manifold and throttle body assembly will have to be removed to do this job. The worst thing is all the components bolted to the rear of the intake manifold. Before you try this I would tighten the valve cover nuts and clean the oily area with brake clean spray to see if you can get the leak down to a dull roar.

The procedure for intake removal is

  • Release fuel pressure in fuel feed line. CAUTION: This work must not be done when engine is hot. If done so, it may cause adverse effect to catalyst.
  • Disconnect negative (-) cable at battery
  •

  • Drain coolant. WARNING: To help avoid danger of being burned, do not remove drain plug (2) and radiator cap while engine and radiator (1) are still hot. Scalding fluid and steam can be blown out under pressure if plug and cap are taken off too soon.
  • Remove strut tower bar (2).
  • Disconnect coupler from intake air temperature sensor, and MAF sensor.
  • Remove surge tank cover (1).
  • Remove air cleaner upper case, intake air hose, intake air pipe (1) and surge tank pipe (2) as one component. Do not disassemble them, when removing and reinstalling.
  • Disconnect accelerator cable (1) and A/T throttle cable (2) (for A/T vehicle) from throttle body
  • Disconnect water hoses (3) from throttle body.
  • Disconnect injector wire (1) coupler.
  • Disconnect brake booster hose(2) from intake manifold.
  • Disconnect couplers of TP sensor (1) and IAC valve (2).
  • Disconnect earth terminal (3) from intake collector
  • Remove clamp bracket (4) from intake collector.
  • Disconnect couplers from manifold absolute pressure (MAP) sensor, EVAP canister purge valve (1), earth terminal (9) and EGR valve (2).
  • Disconnect PCV hose (6) from cylinder head cover. Disconnect breather hoses (8) from throttle body or cylinder head cover.
  • Disconnect hoses of EVAP canister purge valve hose (4), heater hose (5) and water hose (7
  • Remove EGR pipe (3).
  • Disconnect hoses of heater (1), EVAP canister (4), fuel feed (2) and fuel return (3).
  • Remove throttle body (1) and intake collector (2) from intake manifold (3).
  • Disconnect hoses of PCV valve and EVAP canister purge valve from intake collector
  • Remove throttle body (1) from intake collector.
  • Remove IAC valve from throttle body.
  • Remove EGR valve and EVAP canister purge valve from intake collector
  • Remove intake manifold bolts (8 pcs.) and nuts (4 pcs.).
  • Remove intake manifold
  • Remove ignition coil covers.
  • Disconnect ignition coil couplers and remove ignition coils
  • Remove cylinder head covers

Thanks, looking at this procedure, I don't think I want to due the work myself. It is not like my 1974 Nova that I had which only required draining the oil and removing the valve cover bolts.

    Answer

I wish it was a '74 nova. I have done several of these and never had any fun at all. I call these five tray jobs as it takes five magnetic trays to keep all the parts orginized.

Try tightening the valve cover nuts and cleaning it may be enough to stop it.

    Thanks for using JA
