Question

i have a 19 1/2 year old cat. she seems to be doing alright, but, she has become very thin now, she smells because she doesn't really bother to clean herself anymore, and is deaf and i think blind in one eye. she gets around ok, drinks alot of water and eats ( but her stomach growls alot) she always uses the litterbox, never anywhere else. what determinate signs do i look for when deciding when to put her down. i have a young son and i really don't want to come home to find her dead, and i don't want to watch her get worse and worse, but if it's not her time, it's not her time. please advise.

she is 19 1/2 years old....not much you can do. just want to do the right thing for her. she doesn't seem to be in any pain. she sleeps alot (even for a cat) she eats some and drinks alot of water. she uses the box and almost never cleans herself. she is deaf and possibly blind in one eye. but very affectionate, and very vocal. i have caught her just staring off into space a few times recently. what do i look for when it's time to put her down.

Hi there,

Is she eating regularly?

What food?

How long is her stomach growling?

Thanks,

Terri

she eats both soft and some dry food her stomach growls mostly in the late night, i then take her to the food bowl because i think she may forget where it is. when we feed her in the morning, we take her to it and be sure that she eats then when we are watching. she always eats some. this pleases our other cat (who is 13 and has part of his brain missing, which makes his back legs not work very well) because he has gained alot of weight eating what she doesn't. but when jezebel is eating, he sits off to the side to let her have what she is going to eat before he digs in.

Dear friend,

May God bless you for having a special needs kitty and a cat Jezebels age. You have taken wonderful care of them.

As long as Jezebel is eating I don't think it's quite her time. A cats appetite is the best barometer of her health.

Add a half a pepsid a/c tablet to her last night meal to clear up acid reflux and stop the rumbling

You will know when she is ready to leave you as she will stop eating.

For now I would just enjoy her.

Blessings in 09 and always,

TMerri

she and i will share the pepcid, i already use plenty of it myself. thanks. rotten is a funny cat. we found him in the woods of cleveland, oh. he was a day old. we bottle fed him for weeks and he had ringworm (gross) and we have taken care of him since. he falls over alot just from sitting. he runs into walls and belly-flops from the bed, he is a total ding-dong, but we love him. the best part is when he chases his own tail then when he catches it and he yelps from biting it and hurting himself. that tail is always following him around.
