Question

I am thinking about adopting a two year old boxer. She is blind and at some point may need to have her eyes removed. Is this a very costly procedure? Approximately how much money should I plan to spend on her surgery.

Hello, XXXXXXXXX, and thank you so much for your question. I hope I can be of some help to you!

I commend you for considering adoption of this "special needs" Boxer! I am sure she is a great dog. Boxers are such a great breed.

The type of surgery you are mentioning is called eye enucleation. It is very difficult to give you an exact quote. The charges can be extremely variable for veterinary care depending on what region you live in (for instance, vet care on either US coast is more expensive than in the Midwest), what clinic you go to, if you are in a city or more rural area, or if a general practitioner or specialist does the surgery.

I can give you an idea what it would cost at my clinic, but I would advise that you talk to your local vet for a more specific quote of what this would cost in your area.

I am in the midwest, area. At our clinic, surgery charges are based on the surgical time involved, the equipment required, the anesthetic type and time of anesthesia, and medications, fluids, hospitalization, etc. I would say roughly that the cost at my clinic for an enucleation of both eyes at the same time would be $1000-1200. Again, being in the midwest, our charges are often less than other parts of the country.

I hope this helps. Let me know if you have any more questions.

Dr. Marcia
