Question
I have a 8 year old Aussie who is slowing down. He does not jump on the bed or furniture any more and is moving slow. Starting today, he is limping while he walks/run. Can I give him something over the counter? One friend recommended Glucosamine. Does that work?

Nothing yet. Have noticed he is moving slow, but not anything to be concerned about. Want to help him with mobility since I know he is getting up there. Just started to limp today. Is walking and running if need be, looks like he is just sore.

Answer
I am sorry to hear that your dog is showing the signs of age. The questions that you ask are very compassionate ones.
There are no over the counter pain medications that are totally safe and effective to give to a dog. Some of them are toxic.
There is a debate on the effectiveness of glucosamine. The debate centers on several points. 1. If the dog has arthritis then the glucosamine won’t do anything to alleviate the inflammation or the pain. @. If the dog has lost cartilage, nothing will replace that, the similar thought is that you cannot grow grass on a sidewalk. 3. The glucosamine molecule has been said to be too big to be absorbed.
I would suggest that you take your dog into a vet for a complete check up and see what medications is suggested.

Thank you for your response. I was hoping for something that I may be able to try with out the cost o the vet. My dog goes to the vet and has his annual check up. I thought this may offer some thing else to avoid the expense.
Answer
Rimadyl is one of the most common medications that is given for this and it is a prescription medication. You would have to see the vet to get it.
