Question

I need some advice for my wedding. I am going to have a 1 pm Saturday wedding in July. The full catholic mass is scheduled to start at 1 pm and according to the priest it should take 45-50 minutes. The reception site is 15-25 minutes away depending on traffic. I'm not sure what time to start the cocktail hour. We only have 5 hours at the site, and I don't want to use up all of it on cocktails. However, i also don't want to be rushed on church and reception pictures or keep people waiting before the reception starts. I am suppose to sign my contract tomorrow with what time I want the reception to start, and I don't know what to do.

Answer

Congratulations!

I'd think that 3:00 or 3:30 would give you more than enough time. Especially if traffic has an impact.

You'd have time between the events to do some of your photos at the church and family photos.

The traffic patterns and timeline will be crucial for this event and I'd probably sit down with the photographer and ask precisely how much time they require to get the shots you want. I'd assign someone to 'wrangle' the photo subjects so that they are shot in a timely, organized way but not 'rushed'.

For the early arrivals, maybe you could arrange for the venue to present water and/or wine in the foyer or great room so that people aren't entering the reception room and just lingereing there until you arrive?

Make up a shot list and call your photographer then assign a 'wrangler'. Email them the entire list of people to be photographed AND, if you've got time, email them a file (docier) of photos of the person, their name, their relationship/Title. This way the 'wrangler' knows who everyone is and can identify them by face and name. This is what we do for our clients.

Hope that helps and thanks for choosing JustAnswer.

You're so welcome!

The key to success is planning. There aren't problems... only challenges.

You shouldn't have to be stressed about this on your wedding day. I hope the advice gives you all the relaxation and comfort you can handle! I think you'll find it does.

Assuming the cocktail hour went from 3:30 - 4:30, do you think that starting a full dinner at 4:30 in the summer is too early?

Accepted Answer

Good morning!

It's your day. Your schedule. Folks tend to gather in the mid- to late afternoon for holiday gatherings and meals, right?

It may be a little earlier than a typical "dinner" hour, but you'll be fine! Then there are the meal, dancing and the cake, assuming a more traditional reception timeline.

It's thoughtful of you to be concerned. If you're worried that people will get hungry again later... I'm sure they can take care of that themselves. What is your concern?

Again, the most important aspect of your day is declaring your vows, being with family and friends, celebrating the day and gathering to spend time together after the ceremony. I wouldn't worry about the meal time too much.

Thanks for the chance to offer assistance. Relax and enjoy the time leading up to the ceremony! Congratulations to you both.
