If a tester's score is 1.5. The mean is 3.5 and the standard deviation is .5. How do I determine how many standard deviations the scorer is from the mean.

Hi there!


We need to compute the "z score", which tells us how many stdevs your score is from the mean:
z = (x-mu)/sigma, where x is the tester's score, mu is the mean, and sigma is the stdev


mean = 3.5
x = 1.5
sigma = 0.5


z = (1.5-3.5)/0.5
z = (-2)/0.5
z = -4


The score is -4 standard deviations from the mean (4 standard deviations below the mean).
