Vision blurs, no mens. cycle, heavy pulse feeling in head (pressure no pain), weight 128, 5'7", feel cold, tired, joints ache, All was elevated after surgery, but has slowly returned. Cortisol, calcium & cholesterol high. What type of endo. dr. should I see? What specialty?

Optional Information

Age: 46; Female, Massachusetts

Already Tried:
Removal of one parathyroid gland. Want to prevent problem from recurring, because I feel same symptoms slowly returning. My endocrynologist doesn't know what caused this, because this occurs in women over 65. Therefore, she doesn't know how to prevent it.

Answer

Dear XXXXXXXXXXX; The endocrinologist is the correct subspecialty altho you should contact your surgeon to infrom him(her) of your continued post-surgical discomfort and the effect that surgery had on the seventh facial nerve. The absence of a mentrual cycle is temporary if you were menstruating before surgery Any surgery on the parathyroid may temporarly effect thyroid function. Parathyroid disease and tumors certainly do occur in younger women. A patient of mine had hyperparathyroidism last week at age 42. You should see the endocrinologist again or seek another for evaluation and thyroid blood tests and serum calcium levels. Good luck

The surgeon already knows and cannot offer any assistance. He almost didn't remove the gland because of insignificant blood test results. Only after ultrasound and nuclear tests were done, was the sign of tumors apparent. I am looking for a dr. that specializes in this (not diabetes, etc.), but I don't know who to search for.

Accepted Answer

Being in NY, I cannot give you a name in Massachusetts but with Harvard nearby, I would suggest called Mass General or Women`s Brigham ,dept of endocrinology for a recommendation.

OK. Nevermind. I just wanted the correct category name that an endrocrynologist would specialize in, not necesarily a dr's. name. Brigham is the facility where they don't know which dr. to send me to. I waited 3 mo. just see a dr. there, then 2.5 more months for the surgery that they almost didn't perform. It should have been faster than that, because I brought all of my records with me after I moved from Florida to Mass. last May. They are nice to me, but are lost at what to do. They don't know how to prevent it and I don't really want to wait 3 more months to be told the same thing. I only have 3 glands left and would kind-of like to keep them (ha, ha, ha). Thanks Anyway Smile
