Question

do the labor laws regulate mandatory meetings and education/trainings? I work part time for a small company that is requiring us to attend training, but it is only offered 1 day and I cannot rearrange my full time job. Can I be disciplined if I cannot attend?

Accepted Answer

No, California does not have any state labor code which regulates mandatory meetings and/or educational training, especially when it relates to a private employment company. The employer is considered to set the ground rules and can make such meetings/educational training mandatory. This would be based on their existing employment policy that the employer has put into place. Can you be disciplined for not attending? That is left at the discretion of the employer. So long as their actions are not based on some form of discrimination, the employer's actions are considered legal.
