Question

Got home from Reno, NV last night and turned the corner to the house and noticed a very loud clanging/grinding noise coming from the rear axle. 2001 Burban 5.3l. It does it as soon as I move foward. rear wheels shake like they're gonna fall off. Any ideas?

Answer

Hello XXXXXXXXXXXX: First have you checked the lug nuts? They do work loose sometimes. If they are tight do you see any oil leaking down the inside of the tires and wheels? They should be dry and free of any oil. If there is oil then you need to have the wheel bearings checked. They can be expensive to replace.

If this helps please click accepts. If you still need further help send a message by way of need more help and I will get right back to you. Roger

Lug nuts are tight. No oil leaking either. Could it be possible that the tranny or axle itself is bad? It seems like something is slipping. My husband suspects tranny going out or the axle gears/shafts!

Answer

OK that helps a lot. First thing to do is have the rear differential serviced. The oil gets dirty over time and causes the rear clutch plates in the rear end to get grabby. This causes you to have a feeling of the rear tires wobble when going around a corner. The fluid does take a special additive when replacing the fluid. Roger

The rear wheels only wobble with the clanging noise. This happens when I barely take off from a stand still. Only foward not reverse! Could it realy be as simple as you say?

NO if there is a clanging noise does the noise come from behind you or does seem to be under the drivers area. Have you been hearing a tweeting sound that only happend when you were starting from a stop?

No tweeting sound! I just checked and it seems the clanging is coming from the middle. But the wheels shaking are in tune with the clanging noise.

Answer

I would suspect the noise could be the drive line. You have two u joints in the drive shaft. When they go bad the create a lot of noise and a terrible vibration. The problem could also be in the transmission? But if you have had no problems in that area than i would suspect the drive line as the source of the noise.

One last thing! My husband says that the clanging only happens when the wheels are in a particular part of its rotation. Seems as if the teeth/splines are slipping as he puts it.

Accepted Answer

OK I still would check the u joints. This can be done by shaking the drive shaft side to side and up and down. If the drive line does not move excessively then I would remove the rear axle inspection cover and inspect the teeth an the ring and pinion. If the problem is in the rear axle area it will be very obvious to see.I know this is jumping around a lot but some things are best done in person. I hope this has helped. Roger. PS. I need to run a service call and will be out about 2 hrs. I will check reply when i return.
