I wasn't able to type my question earlier, so here it is... Our bassett hound got into a bag od chocolate chips around 5:00 today. My husband said he didn't even eat 1/4 of the bag before they found him with it. But he has vomited 3-4 times over the past houror two and has been drinking alot of water. He seems to feel fine though and is still playfull. We just wanted to find out if there is anything we should do for him

Accepted Answer

I dont know how much your Bassett weighs or how big this bag is, but I'll give you the important info you need.

For a 40 lb dog: 13.3 ounces of chocolate chips would be toxic

For a 50 lb dog: 16.6 ounces of choc chips would be toxic

For a 60 lb dog: 20 ounces

For 75 lb dog: 25.2 ounces

It is most likely you aren't near the toxic dosing. If you are (dependent on size of bag), you need an emergency vet, as it is too late to induce more vomiting, and activated charcoal treatment would be needed.

Most likely, it was just the diet change that caused the vomiting as well as the caffeine effects. Monitor him well tonight, and try to feel his chest/ heart rate. If pounding, he needs a vet regardless, as he may jut be more sensitive to the effects of chocolate. But if doing ok, you can just feed a bland diet of boiled chicken or boiled hamburger meat and white rice for a day or two, then gradually switch back to normal diet if diarrhea occurs. It would be doubtful for vomiting to continue.

Good luck, and let me know if I can help further.

Christine
